5 Steps to Re-Find your Creativity

Whether you are trying to finish an assignment, journal, or take up a new creative hobby, coming to a roadblock can be tough and frustrating. So, if banging your head against your desk isn’t putting any good ideas in it, then try some of these steps to finding your creativity all over again.


 Being creative is something that has to happen freely: putting pressure on yourself to be creative is the number one way to get rid of your creativity. So relax, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and allow creativity to come to you when it’s ready.

Go for a walk

 Leaving the space you are in and getting outside for a minute is a great way to get the juices flowing. Sometimes a change of scenery is just what you need to get going again. Even leave your phone at home: distractions like these can suck the creativity out of you by promoting procrastination.


It doesn’t matter if you feel silly. Take a moment to yourself. Sit on the floor, in a chair, or lie down on your bed; and take a minute to think. Focus on your breathing and get in a better, more relaxed mindset. Then, when you feel more at ease, with your eyes closed, think about what you want to accomplish and why. Reflecting on why you enjoy doing this creative activity in itself can be inspiring.

Take refuge in something or from someone that you find inspiring

 Think about a person that you find particularly inspiring. Maybe this is a person that you want to be more like, or maybe they are part of a movement that you want to take part in. For instance: if you find minimalism very inspiring, or the person that founded a company that you like and support. Put down the pen and do some research on whatever is going on in the world that you think is positive and would like to be a part of. Looking at the type of person you want to be can be inspiring.

Brain Dump

 I know what you’re thinking, ‘what the heck is a brain dump?’ A Brain Dump is a throw up of ideas on paper. Write down everything you’re thinking, everything that’s on your mind. Get it out, whether you make a list or a paragraph, just get it out of your system. Doing this can help clear your mind and make room for whatever is in front of you, rather than thinking about all these things bouncing around in your head.


Whether the first step helped trigger your creativity, or the brain dump was the only thing that helped, get out and start creating now! You’re ready! Sometimes just taking a moment to yourself is the only thing you really need to get going.
